Jones Soda - 2013 Halloween Flavors

The rumors are true - Jones Soda Co. have brought back their Halloween flavored sodas!

Even though Jones Soda has released different varieties of Halloween soda throughout the years, I've actually never tried any of them.  Before I started The Holidaze, I overlooked treasures like this because I didn't fully embrace the season.  When I first read about these on X-Entertainment in 2006, I was in my 2nd year of College and didn't have the time or patience to keep up with every new release.  Halloween hardly lasted a night, let alone a full two months! Looking back, I wish I did it differently, because I know how happy these things would have made me.  I even picked the cans up, looked at them, and put them back down.  While the review was enough for me back then, I've since changed my mindset to go out of my way and experience things first-hand to share them here for whoever wants to read.  It fully enhances, expands, and extends the season.  So when I read that Jones Soda was bringing their Halloween sodas back, I knew it would be high on my list of spooky priorities.  Luckily, my not-so-local Target is finally stocked for the season!

The can designs are amazing!!  I've talked about Halloween soda before, mentioned what I'd like to see and how I'd do things differently, but thankfully, Jones and I think very much alike!  First, we have a "Red Licorice" flavor featuring Frankenstein.  I absolutely love the way he's designed.  The red and green contrast should remind you of Christmas, but they used so much distress, and so many grungy brush strokes, that these cans could never be confused for anything other than Halloween.  They're works of art and I'm so happy they're back with new designs!

We had fun guessing what color the liquid would be before we popped the can open.  This one was obviously going to be red, but it's a beautiful red.  It's the type of color you'd expect from any red-dyed Halloween drink.  You want to pretend and imagine that you're drinking blood.  Act as if you're in "The Lost Boys" and are about to join the vampires by drinking bubbling blood from the Golden Boned Goblet.  That's what makes these flavors so special.  I love Cranberry Sierra Mist, which is almost the same color, but it doesn't pour from the head of Frankenstein and that makes a huge difference!

You have to use your imagination and associate these sodas with the season because the flavors are odd and, chances are, you won't like them all.  In this case, Red Licorice is a bust.  It tastes more like Robitussin than candy, but has enough sugar to know the difference.  It's not horrible, none of these flavors are, but it's not something you'd drink regularly.  But that's okay!  I wasn't expecting deliciousness, I was expecting a conversation starter and a Halloween boost.  If nothing else, that's what this can gave me.

Here we have the "Candy Corn" flavor featuring a werewolf.  It's gorgeous.  This werewolf looks a bit more deranged than your usual wolf man.  One eye is bigger than the other, his hair is very unkempt, and we're not sure if he's smiling, snarling, or ready to attack.  That's what Jone Soda can do to a man.  Actually, this might have been how I looked when I finally found Halloween aisles at Target.  The only person moving faster toward the products than me was my girlfriend.  It's kinda sad how excited we get over spending money on soda and cereal!

Before you look at the next picture, guess what color the soda is going to be based on the flavor name and can color.

Ahhhh that's just awesome!  Not only is it orange, but it's a bright, almost neon orange!  Seriously, the picture doesn't do this justice.  As soon as it settled in the cup, it was as if the liquid was actually glowing.  Between the visual and the aroma, this was guaranteed to be a hit.

As soon as we tasted it, my girlfriend and I both agreed that the Candy Corn flavor is actually that of Creme Soda with more sugar.  If you swish it around in your mouth a little bit, you can tell there's a candy corn flavor, but it's not very distinct and I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing.  This is very good as it is and probably one of two that you'd actually drink on a consistent basis.

I've changed the order in which we actually tried these for a better (I hope) post, but "Caramel Apple" is actually what we tried first.  We were both very excited for this one because it sounded like a tasty flavor.  On top of that, just look at this can character.  What is he?  He looks like he's melting.  He's literally falling apart in front of our very eyes and we have no idea why.  His eye has escaped his socket and, from the looks of things, his left eye isn't too far behind.  Is he a zombie?  If he is, he'll be a skeleton before he knows it.  My only hope was that the flavor didn't do this to him.  Perhaps it was a cruel joke by Jones.  Time to guess the color and see for ourselves!

I was hoping for a green color.  I would have killed for a neon green color to match whatever juice is leaking out from Melt-Man's pores, but we get a dark brown color.  When it settles, it looks more maroon, but regardless it smells like Fall.

The flavor is unique.  You can tell there's a hint of caramel and apples, but it's also bitter enough to taste like Fall.  Again, it's not something I'd drink on a regular basis, but it's far from bad.  If I was having a Halloween party or camping out on a dark night, this would be the drink I'd offer friends.  They may turn it down for a Pepsi, but to truly embrace the Fall season, this is the type of drink you'd want to have.  It's not the best tasting Jones Soda , but it finds the perfect medium between Halloween and flavor.  In moderation, I like it!

In real-life and in this post, "Blood Orange" was saved for last because I had a feeling this was going to be the best flavor.  But before we get into that, we gotta give major props to Jones for another amazing can.  I love Dracula, but any Dracula colored anything other than white gets bonus points in my book.  In this case, we have a purple Dracula, with yellow eyes, and blood stains on his teeth and lips.  Plus, this is the only can that displays an actual pun associated with the can character. "Blood" Orange, get it?  I remember when Jones Soda used to do that with all their Halloween flavors, but I think they've realized they don't need to.  Just the fact that they're designed for the season with flavors associated with it is enough for us all.

I was hoping for a purple color, expected orange, but received something in the middle.  This is such an awesome color and confirms that whatever dye Jones Soda uses is better than anything I've ever seen before.  It's probably horrible for us, but so is everything else we eat and drink on Halloween.  I'll take my chances to drink a pinkish-red colored, Blood Orange flavored, Dracula canned, Halloween soda in the middle of September.  Sounds good to me!

As I assumed, this is the best Jones Soda of them all.  Imagine orange soda with a hint of something else to provide an extra punch of flavor.  I guess that's the "blood."  I've never actually had a blood orange before, but if it tastes anything like this drink then I have a new favorite fruit.  This is delicious and, along with "Candy Corn," this is something that I'd drink at any time.  If you're going to pick up any 4-pack of Jones Soda Halloween mini-cans, this is the one I recommend, most.

Finding these cans were a pleasant surprise.  As soon as I heard the rumor, I knew this would be my opportunity to finally try them.  After missing out on them so many years prior to now, I'm happy to have finally redeemed myself and picked these up.  In my opinion, these are the best can designs I've seen released by Jones and, if there was ever a year to join in on the fun, this is the one.  If we've learned nothing else this season, it's that this may very well be the greatest Halloween of all-time.  Of course, it's up to us to create memories and moments outside of trying candy, food, drinks, and cereal, but these companies are surely giving us enough gasoline to fuel our energy.

Spooky Cola

Last year, I talked about the lack of Halloween edition Cola's (2011 Halloween Soda's.)  I was surprised to see so little in terms of advertising and marketing when it comes to Pepsi and Coca-Cola branding their cans and bottles during the Halloween season.  Maybe they simply don't have to, because their loyal customers aren't going to jump ship over a logo, but who knows?

Remember when Coke released their Polar Bear cans?  My God, I never thought I'd see such an uproar over a can of soda.  Is it diet?  Is it regular?  Oh no, I can't tell!!!  Seriously, relax, and maybe read the label.  That always seems to help.  I get that people don't want to be bothered with any extra effort throughout their day, and I agree that soda should require no effort at all, but why can't we all appreciate the creativity?  Those white cans were pretty awesome and I actually bought a few just because of the design.  I guess for every 10 people who flip out negatively, there's that one nerd who does the opposite!

Unfortunately, last year, there was nothing available for me to get excited over.  I didn't find anything, not even Mountain Dew Pitch Black or Jones Soda, so I had to make my own, custom, soda graphics.  A Holidaze reader, Shawn Robare, informed me that there were Halloween soda cans in store, and that's great, but I guess my area was all out.  BUT.. not this year!!

These are the mini cans that I heard about in previous years.  I think I've seen them once before, but it was well before I started The Holidaze.  Regardless, I found them this year and you really should have seen my face when I did.

Whenever I'm at Target, I walk way ahead of my girlfriend because I can't wait to look at the Halloween stuff while she is usually focused on the make-up and clothes.  These cans caught my eye and I stood there pointing to nobody.  I had to tell her to come over and look at them!  She was excited, but probably more so for me than these cans.

It's crazy how happy I get over these things, but this made my day!  Look at those Canada Dry cans!  There's a Mummy!! I don't know what a Mummy has to do with Canada, and I can only assume that those Lobsters have something to do with Canada, but it doesn't matter either way.  The fact that there is a Mummy at all, especially one that's giving us a smirk, its just awesome!

This one is my absolute favorite in both flavor and design!  First of all, black and orange are the two true Halloween colors.  After that?  Purple and green.  Now, I know the logo features blue, but it's close enough and, with that green leaf, we have everything we could have wanted from a Sunkist Halloween can!  Now, you throw in an amazingly designed Vampire and his bat brothers, and we've found perfection.  Ohh, and I didn't even mention that tiny tombstone in the right corner.  You know you've made a great product when the tombstone is an after thought.  Come on!

If you read last year, or clicked the links I posted above, then you saw the Pepsi, Diet Pepsi, Cherry Pepsi, Code Red, and Coca-Cola designs I made myself.  Well, the new Sunkist can gave me an idea for a new Orange flavor and it will be revealed by the end of this post.  For now, we're moving on!

AhhrooooooooooooooT Beer!  That's the only correlation between A&W and the Wolf Man that I can find.  That and the fact that they're both brown.  The latter is probably the reason for this partnership, and I'm completely cool with that.  I love this can.  I would have made the Wolf Man look less like Wile E. Coyote, but it's a minor complaint.  We still have the spooky woods and full moon.  The fall atmosphere is depicted perfectly and it makes for one of the best cans I've ever seen.  It's playful, it's fun, and it's worth buying for decorative purposes, let alone for flavor!

The Sunkist Vampire is my favorite, but man this is a close second.  A haunted castle, lightning surrounding the can, and Frankenstein!  So awesome.  He looks like he's holding the 7-UP logo, but I can't be sure.  But it doesn't matter, I was sold after I saw the first can.  At this point, we're just getting bonuses here.

Now, I know I said my girlfriend wasn't excited as I was, but I think that might have been said a bit prematurely.  Because, as soon as I started taking pictures, she created this..

It's a Haunted Castle of Spooky Soda Cans!!  You have to give it up for the symmetry here!  We have 3 Canada Dry cans on the bottom, 2 Sunkist Orange cans in the middle, 6 Root Beer cans wrapping around those, and the lightning struck Frankenstein can up top!  I've seen champagne fountains before, and they're beautiful, but I think she's topped it.  These cans don't even need to pour and I'm already convinced that they belong at weddings.  All weddings.  All the time.  Let's take Halloween and make it a year-long celebration.  I'm in such a 'daze right now, that I'm ready to stay in this season forever.

The coolest part about these mini cans, and I assume this was the motive, is that they're perfect for Trick-or-Treaters!  I know kids usually want candy and candy alone, but this probably packs more sugar per sip than a bag of skittles.  Plus, I know what type of impact this will have on kids that truly embrace the Halloween season.

I remember when Pizza Hut branded their entire store, boxes, and cups to represent the Universal Monsters.  I don't know how I old I was, but it's an image that stands out in my mind as one that really captured the spirit of the season.  Somewhere, there's a kid who's going to get a few of these cans and remember drinking them with their Mom, Dad, Brother, or Sister.  It's going to create a memory for somebody and that means more to The Holidaze than anything else.  To some, it's just a cool graphic.  But, to others, this is more than a piece of art.

Speaking of art..

Picking up where I left off last year, I created a new Halloween Soda graphic design label.  Looking at the Sunkist Vampire for inspiration, I went with Crush Orange soda this year.  If I were to produce my own Halloween version of this tasty soda, I'd definitely change the flavor and rename it "Blood Orange."  I changed the color of the logo and added dripping blood to the border.  Of course, it'd be a limited edition.  If I saw this in stores, it would be an immediate purchase.  I would probably buy a few 12-packs and just keep them sealed.  That's one of the perks of being able to work with graphics.  I'm able to make what we all want to see and share it with whoever reads this blog.  Hopefully you enjoyed this design and, once again, please check out last year's and let me know what you think.

If you have any designs of cool product ideas you've had, share them with me @HolidazeBlog on Twitter and I'll post them on The Holidaze!  I'd love to see your work!

Halloween Soda?

Ya know, I was thinking about all the various products that brand themselves differently for the Halloween season and I realized that Pepsi and Coca-Cola don't bother.  Can you believe that?  It just doesn't make any sense.  If you've read The Holidaze at all, you'd know how much of a stickler I am when it comes to seasonal packaging.  It adds so much to the Holidays and increases my interest in the product.  So why do the top cola companies, who have both created amazing art in the past, no longer take part in Halloween?  I don't know the answer, but it disappoints me that I don't see orange Coke cans everywhere I go.

Pictured above is proof that Halloween Edition Soda did in fact exist.  At one point in time, Sunkist, A&W, Canada Dry and 7-UP all put on a costume for Halloween.  Personally, I don't remember ever seeing these mini cans, but according to this site http://www.drinkwhat.com/halloween-chill-for-color-changing-thrills-soda-drinks/ they were for real!

They look awesome!  If these cans were available now, especially this week, I would have picked up as many as I found.  But, unfortunately, nothing like this exists.  At best, I found a pack of orange soda with a Haunted House on the box and cans.  It was something, but not enough to make me go bananas.  Orange you glad I didn't say Orange?

All candy corny jokes aside, we're stuck with Jones Soda, which I've seen, but have yet to try.  I planned on doing so this year, but Target didn't have any in stock.  In recent years, they had shelves and shelves filled with Jones Soda, but not this Halloween.  At least I have Google Images..

Those cans would have been so friggin cool to have in my 'fridge!  I love the cartoon monsters, especially Frankenstein.  I know, he's really "Frankenstein's Monster," but I like calling him Franky better.  Those flavors just sound dreadfully amazing as well.  Lemon Drop Dead, Spookiwi, Candy Corn, and Buried Pomegranate?  That screams Halloween and is nothing but creative.  Sadly, unless I find some Jones' in the next week, I won't know if the flavor matches the can.

Since I can't find any Jones Soda and the bigger companies won't do their part to make my Halloween even better, I decided to imagine what those cans or bottles would look like if they did.  These designs are not to scale, but for doing them in an hour, they're pretty good.  If Pepsi or Coke released anything even close to these next year, I'd be more than pleased.  Check 'em out!

Halloween Diet Coke

This is simple.  Take a classic Diet Coke design and add a spider web.  It isn't much, but it provides just enough spookiness to remind you of Halloween.

Haunted Diet Pepsi

This Haunted Diet Pepsi design would only work if Pepsi decided to change the color of it's classic red, white, and blue logo.  In my opinion, their logo is so iconic that they can afford to do so for a short period of time.  In celebration of Halloween, making the legendary logo look like the moon would be perfect for this broom-riding witch.  If I saw this in stores, I'd most definitely buy it.

Wild Halloween Cherry

This is design heavy, but it's worth it.  This time, we're not changing the logo, but we're adding purple and green which, in my opinion, are two of only four true Halloween colors.  The red cherries now have faces and the font is just as much evil as it is wild.  This would instantly catch my eye.

Halloween Edition Pepsi

What says "Halloween" more than the colors black and orange?  By changing the logo, we're once again messing with what people are used to.  However, I refuse to believe that Pepsi would drop in sales due to a color change.  No way.  In fact, I'd be willing to bet that sales would rise if Pepsi ever released a can designed this way.  Who wouldn't want to throw a Halloween party with this beauty in the cooler?

Blood Red Mountain Dew

I've always been a fan of Mountain Dew: Code Red, especially around Halloween because it looks like blood.  For that reason, coming up with this idea was easy.  I suggest that, for the month of October, Code Red should become Blood Red, complete with Dracula and all.  This is very design heavy, but Mountain Dew usually is.  They're also big on special editions, such as Pitch Black, so I don't see why this couldn't happen.  Read this and take my idea, MTN Dew!!

Halloween Coca-Cola

Finally, we have the most classic of all pops -- Coca-Cola.  As you know, Coca-Cola is known for their signature text and color scheme.  Pepsi is blue, and Coke is red, we all know not to differentiate the gangs.  But, for Halloween, this design is a must.  It maintains the classic appearance that Coca-Cola is known for while only changing the colors.  The addition of a Jack-O-Lantern smile provides customers with just enough Halloween spice.  But, really, the black and orange is what sells this soda.

As you can see, I have too much time on my hands.  But that's not the point.  The point is that these companies need to do whatever they can to enhance the Holidays.  This isn't hard and it would only benefit the producer and, most importantly, the consumer.  I'm sure Pepsi and Coke will never read this or even care, but if they do, I'd hope they take this post and use it to make their product better next Halloween.  Maybe we'll even get a Holidaze Edition.  A man can dream!
